This is one of the most common "which one do I pay for" questions, so here's the straight version with no hype. Everything below comes from the official pricing and help pages.

Quick take

Same sticker price, $20/mo each. Claude drops to $17/mo if you pay yearly. We didn't find a yearly price for Plus on OpenAI's pages.
Neither one gives you a hard message count. Claude at least explains how it works: at least 5x Free usage per rolling 5-hour session, plus a weekly limit, shared across web, desktop, mobile and Claude Code. OpenAI says Plus 'may include usage limits such as message caps' and only publishes Codex estimates.
Images: Plus does image creation. The Claude pages we checked don't mention image generation at all, so it's marked unknown.
Coding: both come with an agent for it. Plus has Codex, and Pro has Claude Code.
Gotchas: Claude's Fable 5/5.1 models aren't in your plan limits; they run on paid usage credits. On ChatGPT, the newer models (GPT-6.1 Sol, GPT-6.1 Terra, GPT-6 Astra) are in ChatGPT Work and Codex, not regular Chat.

Our honest read

If you want images plus a big toolbox (custom GPTs, scheduled tasks, Sites, projects), Plus covers more ground. If you mostly write or code, want limits you can actually reason about, and are fine paying yearly, Claude Pro is the cheaper of the two.
